
MacDOUGALL, Bridget - 93, died peacefully Friday, December 30, 2011 while residing at Sullivan's Lane, Parkstone Enhanced Care, Halifax. She was born Bridget Ann Rankin, July 5, 1918 in West Mabou, Inverness Co., to Mary (Burke) Rankin and Angus Peter Rankin. She married Angus Alexander MacDougall in 1941, settling in Halifax, and for the next 36 years they raised ten children, until his passing in 1977. She was quick to offer a cheery word or a cup of tea and a biscuit, and was generous with her coveted home made bread. She lovingly crafted knitted items, from mittens and sweaters, to baby sets. Bridget honoured her Cape Breton and Celtic heritage attending musical and social events, often speaking Gaelic, her first language. She was a frequent guest at the Gaelic Speaker's Group. She was a charter member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church and participated in the Catholic Women's League, Sodality, Legion of Mary and Cursillo.
She is survived by her children, Ronald (Cathy), Midland, Michigan; Bernard, Inverness; Lorne, Sydney River; Alexander, Michael and Elizabeth Ann, Halifax; Vincent Douglas, Vancouver, B.C.; and Raymond (Beth), Montgomery Village, Maryland. Bridget was blessed to be called Granny, Nanny and Grandma by 17 grandchildren: Stephen, Melanie, Paul, Lisa, Michael, Laura, Elana, Michael, Scott, Angela, Rosemary, Ainslie, Pascale, Jocelyn, Verity, and Angus; and 18 great-grandchildren: Monica, Michael, Alexandra, Mikaela, Ainslie, Breagh, Mari, Kathleen, Will, Thomas, Austin, Leah, Colton, Kylie, Leo, Elena, Audrey and Liam. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Kathleen VanZutphen and son, Leo. She also is survived by sisters Christie Rankin, West Mabou, and Marie MacPhee, Colindale; and Catherine Annie MacLeod, Sudbury, Ont. She was predeceased by sisters, Catherine and Margaret Rankin and Mary Elizabeth MacKinnon and brother, Alexander Rankin; daughter-in-law Ruth MacDougall and grandson Kevin Van Zutphen. Visitation will be Monday, January 2nd, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. Funeral mass will be celebrated at Blessed Mother Teresa Parish/St. Stephen's Church, 6032 Normandy Dr., (at Robie) Halifax, on Tuesday, January 3, at 10 a.m. Interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville.
