Donald O'Connor Mapp
December 20, 1922 - August 27, 2012
Mapp, Donald O’Connor , 91, of Halifax passed away Monday August 27, 2012 at home. Born in Truro he was a son of the late Joseph Mapp and Gwendolyn Jones. Donald was also a proud grandson of the late, Jeremiah Jones, war hero of the Battles of Vimy Ridge and Passchendale and winner of the Canadian Forces Medallion for Distinguished Service. Donald was employed with the CNR, owned and operated a hardware store, was employed at Canada Manpower and Immigration and was a business agent for the painters, wallpaperers and plasterers union. Donald retired working for the Department of National Defense. After retirement, Donald spent a lot of his time helping others in his role as a Philadelphia Lawyer. He volunteered with many organizations, including the Black Educators Association of Nova Scotia, the NAACP, he was an active member of the Cornwallis Baptist Church, Halifax and Second Baptist Church, New Glasgow where he sang with the choir. Donald was a community activist, and was heavily involved in the social movement, including anti racism. He convinced many businesses and organizations to hire members of the black community, for which he was very proud of. Donald was an avid sportsman; he was a talented hockey player and golfer in his youth. He also enjoyed bowling and boxing. Recently, he was taking up roller blading and piano lessons. Donald was a highly skilled billiards player. He was an avid reader and writer, he wrote numerous opinion pieces to the local paper. He was planning on starting his own newspaper. His family and friends will remember his dapper attire. Donald is survived by sons, Frederick George, Randolph Scott, Rodney Connor; sister, Gwynette Mapp, ON; grandchildren, Richard Mapp, Lisa Mae Tibbetts, Jeffrey Oliver, Kristopher Mapp, Jarrett Mapp, Patrice DesChamp; 11 great grandchildren; nephew, Marvin Williamson; special cousins, Clara Reddick & Lynn Jones. He was predeceased by his wife, Gwendolyn June; son, Raymond Donald; grandson, Jeremy Jefferies; special nephew, Brenton Williamson. A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. Wednesday September 5th at Cornwallis Street Baptist Church, 5457 Cornwallis St., Halifax. Interment will take place at a later date in Brookside Cemetery, New Glasgow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the local food bank and the Parker Street Furniture Bank.
