Dorothy Joyce “Joy” Johns (nee Smith)
Age 92, peacefully passed away on November 1, 2016 in Halifax, NS. Predeceased by her husband Kenneth and survived by daughter Linda Mann (Joe), son Mark Johns (Wendy), five grandchildren Sean, Ryan, Robin Mann, Stephanie (Chris) and Michael Johns and great-grandson Maceo Murdoch.
Joy was a native New Brunswicker who graduated from Mount Allison University with a Bachelor of Home Economics, completed a dietetic internship at the Montreal General Hospital and was a professional Dietitian. She held numerous positions in the field and in many provinces. During her years, she regularly conducted cooking schools for Canada Packers and other corporate sponsors, had radio and TV programs, and regular columns in newspapers and had many publications and awards including an achievement award from the New Brunswick Milk Marketing Board.
While in Dartmouth, Joy pioneered self improvement programs for low income families while she was employed by Dartmouth Welfare Board. In Saint John Joy helped create the Diabetic Teaching Center as well as being an organizer of the Saint John Meals on Wheels Program. Many can thank Joy for her support and guidance in Nutrition Counselling over the years and when she had a private practice in Saint John, NB.
Joy was much loved by her family and many friends who remember her sharp wit. A private memorial service will be held followed by her interment in Moncton, NB.
A special thank you to the wonderful staff of Shannex’s Drummond Hall who always treated her with respect and made her last months comfortable.
Donations may be made in her name to the Canadian Red Cross, Doctors without Borders or any local animal rescue centre.
