<div itemprop="description">CPO2 (Ret'd) Abbott, Duke Charles George, CD2<br /><br />Age 75, of Bedford, passed away peacefully in hospital, surrounded by family in the early morning of Friday 14 November. Born in Musgrave Harbour, Nfld, he was the second son of the late Roland Winfield and Ina Hazel (Stratton) Abbott. Duke is survived by his loving wife Sheila Marie; his children Mitchell, Halifax, Murray, Alberta, and Melanie (Darren) of Halifax; grandchildren Chelsea, Brittany and CJ; and 2 great grandchildren. Also surviving are step children Beth (Aaron) Grady, Calgary, Marc (Xiaoyu) Bailey, Fort McMurray; brother Roland (Bonnie), Nfld, nephew Thomas (Karen) USA, brother-in-law Larry (Kim) Puzach, USA, and mother-in-law, Mary Coombs, Halifax. He was predeceased by his first wife, Janet and his older brother Murray. Duke served in the Royal Canadian Navy and the Canadian Forces for 34 years. During his time of service, he served aboard several ships and in various postings ashore leading to his last employment as Manager of the Navy Wardroom, a demanding job at the top of his profession which he conducted in outstanding fashion. He served also as a flight Steward aboard the RCAF 412 VIP Squadron aircraft, a period of time he remembered fondly and often talked about since he felt privileged to be rubbing shoulders with royalty and senior military and government officials. In fact his services were personally requested by several notables including Princess Anne, Indira Ghandi and Gov General Michener. In retirement he continued to share his skills. He was a quiet, unassuming man who knew contentment when meeting the needs of others. He was a hospitality minister for St Benedict Parish which involved greeting worshipers and visitors to the church, and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Calais Branch, Lower Sackville, NS. In his leisure time, he enjoyed painting, music, dancing, winter visits to Florida, and cooking, particularly his incomparable chicken soup. The family wish to express their heartfelt thanks to Dr. James Fitzgerald, the nurses of the VG hospital (5A-50), and all the caregivers who showed unlimited compassion and exceptional professionalism during a difficult time. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Road, Halifax. There will be no visitation. A funeral mass celebrating Duke&rsquo;s life will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 21 at St Benedict Parish, officiated by Father James Mallon. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Interment will take place in Oakridge Memory Gardens, Middle Sackville. Following the church and internment ceremonies all are invited to a reception at the Calais Legion located on Sackville Cross Road.
