Edgar Lilly - 96, of Halifax, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at the QEII Health Sciences Centre. Born on Saddle Island, Newfoundland June 16, 1920, he was the son of the late George and Charlotte (Strickland) Lilly. After serving as a member of the Merchant Navy from 1939 to 1945, Edgar worked for National Sea Products and later employed with CN, retiring after 30 years. He enjoyed many happy years with family and friends at the cottage in New Ross. Edgar enjoyed woodworking, crafting many miniature sailing schooners and lighthouses. He was a member of St. Mark's Anglican Church, the Royal Canadian Legion and the Canadian Merchant Navy Veterans Association. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Cora (Matthews), daughters Sharon Gorman and Brenda Lilly-Smith (Gary Smith), sons Brian (Janet Lilly) and Bruce. Grandchildren Jeffrey Gorman, Shannon Mumford (Greg), Jennifer Lilly (Craig Messervey), Amy Leeper, Ashley Lilly (Justin Tanner), Kathleen Buffett, Scott and Andrew Lilly. Great-grandchildren Victoria and Aleigh Mumford, Graeme and John Messervey and Ella and Jack Leeper. He was the last surviving member of his family predeceased by sisters Ellen, Sarah, Bessie and Violet and brothers Edward, William, John and Herbert. Visitation to take place at the Altantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Road, Halifax on Thursday evening, January 19th, 2017 from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm. Funeral service will be held at St. Mark's Anglican Church, 5522 Russell Street, Halifax on Friday January 20th 2017 at 1:00 pm. Rev. John Morrell, Rev. Vivien Hannon and Rev. James Purchase officiating. Private family interment to follow. No reception or flowers by request. Memorial donations can be made to St. Mark's Memorial Fund, 5522 Russell St, Halifax, NS B3K 1X2, or the Canadian Cancer Society. Special thanks to all doctors and nurses and staff at the QEII 8.4.
