April 12, 1923 - May 29, 2015
Emmeline Elizabeth "Emm" Burns (Batten), 92, passed away at home on Friday May 29, 2015. Born in Glace Bay, NS on April 12, 1923, Emm was one of fifteen children born to Isaac and Catherine (Haley) Batten.
Emmeline was a loving wife to Tony for 62 years and loving mother to Daniel (Diana), Halifax; Robert (Laurence Pecher), Toronto; Debbie O’Brien (Dave), Halifax; John (Betty Ann Jordan), Toronto; Joanne Burns-Theriault (Stephen Theriault), Halifax; Gary (Sandra Jamieson), Halifax; grandmother to Vanessa Burns, Cristiana Haberlin (Stace), Raphael Burns, Emilie O’Brien, Saera Burns (Reed I’o), Jay Burns, Mark Theriault, Scott Theriault, Samantha Burns, Emmaline Burns and Anthony-Alan Burns; and great-grandmother to Olivia and Lily Trivett, Jack and Ella MacGregor, and Alil’a I’o.
Emmeline is survived by her brothers, Jim, Glace Bay, NS., Tom, Smith Falls, Ont., Naish (Elvira), Glace Bay, NS., Philip (Ruth), Grand Cache, AB., and by sisters, Kathleen (Kay) Yorke, Toronto, Ont., and Anne Marie (James) McDonald, Grand Cache, AB., as well as a large number of nieces and nephews who were all close to her. Emmeline was pre-deased by husband Tony, her siblings - Jack, Gertrude (Gert), Joe, Jenny, Ike, Sister Cecilia Catherine (Mary Frances), Allie, and son David, in infancy.
Emm was a kind and gentle soul who welcomed everyone into her home for “a cuppa tea” along with her delicious cry-baby and oatmeal cookies. She was very proud of her children and their accomplishments. She had a very inquisitive mind and loved to learn about people and discuss world events. Her family relied on her honest wisdom and clear insight into the most complex issues and life decisions. Her support of the love of her life, Tony, was never-ending. They loved to travel and had many trips together throughout their lives. Their love for each other was evident in the way that they would reach for each other’s hand to hold at any given moment. She served as a volunteer for many years at St. Vincent de Paul and other charities. Words cannot describe the impact that she had on her family and friends and she will always be remembered with love. Visitation will be held 2-4pm & 7-9 pm on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 Atlantic Funeral Home, Bayers Road, Halifax. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 4, 2015 at Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta (formerly St. Stephen’s), 6032 Normandy Dr. at Robie, Halifax where Emm was a long-time parishioner. A reception will follow in the church. Burial will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Emm’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice. Online condolences to the Burns family are available through www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com/Halifax
