Giovanni "John" Miccolis
May 26, 1932 - September 23, 2013
Miccolis, Giovanni “John”-81 of Bedford, passed away on Sept 23rd, 2013 at Northwood Centre.
Born in Mola di Bari, Italy, he was the son of Francesco and Adella Miccolis.
Giovanni “John” left his home in Italy as a young man to serve in the Italian Navy. After completing his required time, he joined the Merchant Navy, which brought him to many ports along the Eastern Atlantic Coast.
Due to a ship collision at sea, he spent an extended time in Halifax where he met and married Dora (Bucciarelli), who had also come to Halifax from Italy. They worked hard to build a life together here and raise their son Franco “Frank”.
John worked in construction for many years and began buying and renovating homes. Eventually he began building houses and he took pride in using top quality materials and workmanship.
In his spare time, he loved to work in his backyard garden growing fruit and vegetables. He also made homemade wine for many years which he loved to enjoy with the wonderful Italian meals Dora prepared.
He was an enthusiastic and involved grandfather-Papa-to his twin granddaughters, Jacquelyn and Gina. He spent many hours patiently playing “school” and taking them for walks.
He was proud of his Italian heritage and enjoyed the trips he and Dora took to Italy to visit their families.
He will be dearly missed by his son Franco “Frank” , his daughter-in-law Chrisanne (Moffat) and most especially, his granddaughters.
