Irene Mae Parks
June 15, 1941 - June 30, 2016
Irene Mae Parks Of Halifax. Born June 15, 1941, passed away peacefully June 30, 2016, after a courageous fight with cancer. "I was born in a beautiful little fishing community, Steep Creek, on the shores of Chebucto Bay, Guysborough Co., daughter of Ruby Catherine Parks. My brother was 10 months old and I was three when TB took our mother and her brother three weeks later. Cecil and I became wards of the Public Welfare system. We both ended up in Middle Manchester (10 miles up the road); I became the foster child of Bert and Edith Brown (the very best). Mum took sick six years later and I went to live with Charlie and Sarah Myers, where Cecil had been placed. Eventually I returned to Middle Manchester to live with the Brown's and I was able to help with their care. I had many happy and good years. Then the greatest joy of my life came when Angie (my Little Angel), was born in 1966. A blessing indeed. She grew up and married Ken Twohig, and they gave me three of the best grandchildren in the world, Lindsey Marie, Jessica Theresa and Samantha Irene Twohig. Then Lindsey married and gave me two "Little Darlings", Jacob and Jocelyn Ackles. From 1962-1963 I worked at Victoria General Hospital and from 1963-1965 with the hospital tax commission. In 1966 I began working with the Department of Labour, Apprenticeship Division. I spent 33 years doing what I loved and the people that I worked with were the best; I developed many lasting friendships. I joined Fort Massey United Church when I first came to live in Halifax and after a time became very active in the UCW and eventually became president which has lasted for 22 years, another joy. I also served on the Board of Management, Kirk of Session and on many committees. I enjoyed perfect health until April when I was diagnosed with cancer. Many many thanks to all of my friends, the Church and all the households that allowed me to clean. It was deeply appreciated and much enjoyed." Along with her brother, Mom is also survived by nephews, Steven and Richard Parks and niece, Susan Parks; an abundance of very good friends and extended family. She was predeceased by sisters-in-law, Carol and Phyllis; many of her foster brothers and sisters and many people for whom she cared deeply. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. July 20th in the hall of Fort Massey United Church, Tobin Street, Halifax with Celebration of Life service to be held 11 a.m. July 21st, Rev. Trent Cleveland-Thompson officiating. Burial in William Black Memorial Cemetery, Seabright. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fort Massey United Church or Canadian Cancer Society Nova Scotia Division. I love you Ma.
