<div itemprop="description">J.M. &quot;Michael&quot; MacSween, BSc MSc MD FRAP passed away peacefully at the QE II Palliative Care unit on April 23 2016 after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.<br />Born in Antigonish in 1933 he was the son of the late Roderick and Mary Catherine (MacKinnon) MacSween. Michael was a graduate of Saint Francis Xavier University and also the Dalhousie Medical School, graduating with distinction in 1957. After spending 9 years in general practice in Halifax he went on to pursue postgraduate studies in internal medicine as well as the pioneer field of immunology. He trained with the renowned Dr. Freedman and Dr. Gold at the Montreal General Hospital, then trained and conducted research at the prestigious Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne, Australia and at the Middlesex Hospital in London England. Returning to the Dalhousie Faculty of Medicine in 1972, he became the first certified specialist in clinical immunology in Atlantic Canada. He set up the curriculum and taught for decades. Michael then established the tissue typing and histocompatibility laboratory for the province's multi-organ transplantation program and was Director of it for 25 years. He was recognized for his pioneering role in organ transplantation. He also set up an immunology research laboratory and wrote over 100 papers. He was honoured with a lifetime achievement award in excellence in research. Michael also held various administrative positions during his career. Michael loved sports and was an avid participator. He enjoyed sailing at Saint Margaret&rsquo;s Bay and the family gatherings at the Mason&rsquo;s Point Cottage. Michael is survived by his devoted wife Mary (Walsh); children Louise Boudreau (Marcel), Halifax; Michael (Mabel) of Dartmouth; Dr. Mary Catherine MacSween (Dr. Peter Docherty) Moncton; and Roderick, Halifax; and grandchildren Nicholas, Christopher, Carly, Colin, Julia and Sean. He is also survived by sisters Josephine McNeil and Margaret MacSween both of Halifax and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express sincere thanks for the dedicated compassionate care of Michael particularly the VON and the palliative care unit at the QEII hospital. Funeral service will be held at Canadian Martyrs Church on Inglis Street, Halifax, Monday, May 2nd at 12:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in support of cancer research or the VON.
