Kenneth "Ken" Edgar Edwards
January 20, 1932 - December 22, 2014
EDWARDS, Kenneth (Ken) Edgar – 82, of Halifax, passed away suddenly on Monday, 22 December 2014, surrounded by his family in the QE II. Born January 20, 1932, in Halifax, he was the eldest son of the late Albert and Marie (Mahar) Edwards and grew up in Jollimore. He met the love of his life, Lucille, on a blind date and they spent the next 52 years together until her death in 2010. They enjoyed a wonderful life together, raising three sons and enjoying a great family life, especially “going to the trailer” in the Klahanie campground in Aylesford where he was a jack of all trades and chief hay ride driver. Dad was a man who believed in hard work starting out as young man delivering milk in the Jollimore - Purcell’s Cove area by horse and wagon. He later worked at Texpark and CN Express-Route Canada. Not content to sit idle after “retirement” he worked at TC Welding and Nissan Halifax. He was a supreme tinker/rebuilder with lawn mowers, snow blowers and he never met a sump pump he couldn’t strip down and rebuild from spare parts. He believed that a job worth doing was worth doing right. After truly retiring, Dad stayed active, helping in his parish and bowling where he met Joan Lavers who gratefully shared his zest for life in recent years. He was a past board member of the Credit Union and president of the CN Pensioners Associations, Halifax council. As the “King of Jollimore” he could always be found walking around the Frog Pond trails and the village of Jollimore, talking to all and sundry. An avid people person, Dad once said a friend is just someone you haven’t spoken to yet and lived by this daily as witnessed by his frequent conversations with anyone he met. A passionate sailor in his youth, he sailed out of Armdale Yacht Club wining several titles including a Dominion championship in the Snipe and Bluenose classes (Brat) with “Ducky” Scarfe. Always active in sports, his other true passion was hockey. A hard hitting defenceman, “Crusher” knew all the corners in the old Shirley St arena and Halifax Forum. His love of hockey continued after he finished playing by following the Voyageurs, The Halifax Citadels and for 20 years a devoted Mooseheads fan. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family having been predeceased by his wife, Lucille, infant brother Carl; sisters, Colleen Perry (Fred), Joan Burns (Mike) and Ida Edwards. He is survived by sons, Michael (Randi) and Paul (Sherry) of Halifax and James (Trevor) of Rollingdam NB; grandchildren Craig, Conor, Colleen and Kathryn. He is also survived by Joan Lavers; brother in law, Fred Perry, and many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to the neurology team and all staff of the QEII, especially 8.1, for their wonderful care during the short time Dad was with them. Visitation will be 2-4 pm and 7-9 Monday, December 29, 2014 at Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. A funeral mass will be held Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at 10 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 26 Purcell’s Cove Rd., Halifax. A reception will be held in the parish hall following the service and a private family interment will be held at a later date. Family flowers only, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Diabetes Society or a charity of your choice.
