Kenneth "Ken" Stockdale
October 13, 1922 - April 1, 2016
Stockdale, Kenneth Edward - Age 93, of Halifax, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on April 1, 2016 at Arborstone Enhanced Care, Halifax. Ken was born in historic Hull, England on October 13, 1922. He was the son of the late Percy Edward Stockdale and Elsie May Stockdale. From 1936-1938 Ken apprenticed in the Engineering Drawing Office of William Sizer Ltd. in Hull. He then transferred to Brigham and Cowan Ship Building and Repair from 1938 – 1943. He also attended Hull Technical College, Marine Engineering Division, two nights per week from 1939-1941 apprenticing in drafting and marine engineering. In March 1943 Ken joined the British Merchant Navy as a marine engineer and became an active member of the war effort. From 1943 to the end of the war Ken was assigned to numerous ships and survived being torpedoed by a German U boat off the coast of Algeria. After the war Ken was hired to teach the latest in marine engineering and travelled to numerous ports. He entered Canada via St. John’s Newfoundland in February 1951. It was here that he met his wife to be, Greta. They moved to Halifax and Ken worked at the Halifax Shipyard throughout the 1950’s. He started working at the Halifax Dockyard as a machinist in July 1961. Ken was passionate about his work and was well respected and liked by all who worked with him. He was a highly skilled craftsman who loved what he did for a living and was meticulous with every job he did. It was with regret that he retired in 1988. Ken was a very private man but also a very loving father who always made time for his children. He loved music of all kinds and was an avid cyclist when he was young. He had a very creative mind and would often design and build numerous items at his workbench in the basement. He was a very special man who will be sorely missed by his loving family. Ken is survived by his sons, David (Anne), Halifax, John, Halifax; daughters, Marion (Irvine) Winsor, Newfoundland, Betty (Owen) Evans, Grand Lake, Joan, Bedford, 8 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren and 1 great, great, grandchild. He was predeceased by his wife Greta (Newport); daughter, Doreen; sister, Betty (Leonard) Riley and brother, Peter. As per Ken’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A small, family service will take place at 1:00 p.m. at Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Road, Halifax, followed by a reception at the same location. After the reception, the family will attend the interment at St. John’s columbarium, Halifax. Memorial donations may be made to Gateway Homes Inc, in Dartmouth, or charity of choice.
