Laura Emily MacLean
MACLEAN, Laura Emily – Halifax. It is with a profound sense of love and loss that we announce the peaceful passing of Laura on October 3, 2015, in the Palliative Care Unit of the QEII. Born in River Denys, Cape Breton, she was a daughter of the late John Dan and Catherine (Fortune) MacLean. She grew up in Port Hood until moving to Halifax in 1965. She is survived by her husband and soul mate Russell Fox, and step daughters, Leah Fox and Stephanie Lummis (Greg),and step granddaughter Maia, Halifax; brother Hugh MacLean (Moira McKeigan), Bridgewater; sister Jean Innes and brother in law Bruce Innes, Hammonds Plains; nieces, Tonya Dort (Kevin), Masstown. Kristin Innes (Dave Kaufman), Hammonds Plains; Carla Snow, Port Hawkesbury; Melanie MacLean, Ontario; nephew Stephen Innes, Hammonds Plains; brother in law Charles Fox (Jessie), Bayhead; and Paul Fox (Diane), Kentville; four great nephews, two great nieces and one great great nephew. Laura graduated from Mabou Consolidated Business School in Mabou, Cape Breton, with honours first in the class in 1965. In 1970 she received a diploma in human relations and effective speaking from Dale Carnegie. In October 1984 Laura completed the prescribed study and fulfilled the qualifications required of candidates for the degree of “Exemplar of Beta Sigma Phi”, issued by International Headquarters of Beta Sigma Phi in Kansas City, Missouri. She was an active member of the sororiety for over 20 years. In 1995, Laura enrolled in ballroom dancing, and competed in the Mayflower Ball Dance Competition, and won first place in Fox Trot, Waltz and Cha Cha. For several years Laura was involved in the community as a volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Kidney Foundation, Heart Fund, Metro United Way and the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Starting in 1965, Laura had a successful continuous forty year working career. She held several positions with Canada Mortgage and Housing over a ten year period. Laura’s initiative and ability resulted in a promotion to public housing officer, co-ordinator and supervisor. In this role she supervised the operation of the Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (RRAP) in 33 offices. Laura retired from the Royal Bank in October 2005 after a long and distinguished career, during which she won many company awards and achieved numerous formal accolades for her efficiency and results in several departments, including marketing, mortgages, business services and student loans. She showed exceptional organizational skills, ability to meet or exceed both deadlines and quotas in a timely manner and outstanding sales skills. She was formally recognised as a Royal Performance Top Performer. Laura leaves behind countless friends who will always fondly remember the wonderful times they shared with her. She was an incredible woman with a great sense of humour, endearing smile and a warm loving nature. She was a very compassionate person who had a genuine and deep concern for her close family and friends. Laura was especially kind and generous, always gladly giving and never expecting anything in return. She enjoyed life immensely, especially travel, country music and spending time with family and friends. She had the ability to make new friends easily and loved meeting and talking to new people in her life. She was able to maintain close lifelong friendships, and never took a friend or family member for granted, but always made them feel special. She was a consummate and dedicated hostess who loved entertaining at home with graciousness and style. She always made her guests feel welcome and comfortable. Laura was a perfectionist in all her endeavours, whether at work or home or at social functions. She was a very refined classy lady, who could feel at home at a high society function or a barn dance in her beloved Cape Breton. She was a wonderful wife for her husband Russell during their all too brief marriage. Russell always said he won the relationship lotto when he met Laura, and that his greatest pleasure in life was just being with Laura. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held 6-9 pm, Friday October, 9 at Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Road, Halifax from where a celebration of Laura’s life will take place 11 am, Saturday October 10. A reception will follow at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Oakridge Memory Gardens, 1078 Old Sackville Road, Middle Sackville.
