She attended a one-room grade school in Black Point, New Brunswick, and went on to graduate with a nursing degree from Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Montreal, Quebec, in 1943. Mabel distinguished herself by receiving the Honour Pin at graduation, and in 1944, under the guidance of Dr. Harold Griffith, instituted the first post-operative surgical care recovery room in Canada, at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Montreal. After taking time to raise her four children in Halifax, Mabel returned to work at the Victoria General Hospital where she spent fourteen years working in the Recovery Room and Outpatients Day Surgery. She is survived by her children; Dr. Eric (Mona) Pasquet, Ottawa, ON, Robert (Nancy) Pasquet, Halifax, Helen (Joseph) Smeltzer, West Dover, Margaret Pasquet, Mamaroneck, NY; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Mabel was predeceased by sister, Reta MacMillan, and brother, Raymond MacMillan. At Mabel’s request there will be no funeral. A private memorial is planned. Mabel’s remains will be taken to her childhood home in New Brunswick to rest with her mother, father and sister. The family would like to thank the amazing staff at Parkland for their outstanding care to Mabel over the past five years and to the whole family in her final days.
