Mary Alice Mallay
January 29, 1929 - January 22, 2017
Mary Alice (Hyde) Mallay passed away peacefully at the Halifax Infirmary on Sunday, January 22, 2017, Mary Alice (Hyde) Mallay, aged 87 years, loving mother and grandmother. She was predeceased by her loving husband Dominic J. Mallay. (d. Jan 1994) after 38 years of marriage. Mary is sadly mourned by her three children and five grandchildren. She was loving mother of Bev Jay (Garry), Judy Mallay (Malik) and Kevin Mallay (Agnes). Loving grandmother to Kimberly Jay (Craig), Stephanie Jay, Michelle Jay (Jordan), Matthew Mallay (Jasmine) and Nicole Mallay. Mary Alice (Hyde) Mallay was born in Red Head Cove, Newfoundland, her parents were Martha and James Hyde, Sr. She was one of ten children in a large hardworking family in a Newfoundland fishing village. Like her parents before her, she valued faith, family, hard work and independence. Mary was predeceased by five brothers, Patrick, Raymond, James, Gordon and John Joseph, and by two sisters Josephine Pike (Joe) and Clara Hatch (Cyril). She is mourned by her two surviving brothers, Stan Hyde and William (Mary) Hyde. Mary will be remembered for the time she worked as a selfless and compassionate caregiver in several nursing homes in St. John’s Newfoundland, before she moved to Timberlea, NS with Dominic in their retirement. Mary supported Christian charities and two of her favorites were St. Theresa’s Mission and Chalice. Mary was concerned for needy children around the world and for over a decade she sponsored two children; a boy from Guatemala and a girl from Ghana, making a difference in their lives. She also faithfully watched Daily Mass for Shut-Ins for many years. She will always be fondly remembered as a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. Thanks to the staff of Maplestone Nursing Home, Main Ave, Halifax, NS for the care given to Mary during her time there and to staff of the Halifax Infirmary.
Resting at Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Road, Halifax, NS. with visiting hours on Wednesday evening January 25th, from 7-9pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Thursday, January 26th at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, 6903 Mumford Road, Halifax, NS. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia.
