Ryan, Mary Catherine Teresa (FitzPatrick) passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at the Halifax Infirmary on Sunday, March 12, 2017 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born on July 7, 1946 to the late David G. FitzPatrick and M. Bernadette (Sullivan) in Saint John, New Brunswick.
Mary attended local schools in Saint John, graduating from Saint Vincent’s High School in 1964 as the Class Valedictorian. She received a Lord Beaverbook Scholarship to UNB in Fredericton, N.B. graduating with a B.A. degree in 1968. She obtained her B.Ed degree from St. Thomas University in Fredericton N.B. in 1971. Mary has lived in Halifax since 1970. She taught at Ellenvale Junior High School in Dartmouth, N.S. for a few years before moving to Dartmouth High to teach Mathematics for a number of years. Mary loved a good game of bridge, doing crossword puzzles, discussing world affairs and she had a wide range of lifelong friends and acquaintances.
Mary’s prime interest was her family. She is survived by her daughter Carey and her husband, Scott Berry and their two children, Leo and Nicholas of Ann Arbour, Mi. and her son Jeff and his wife, Carolyn of Dartmouth, NS. She is also survived by her sister Nora (Nonie) Cullinan (Don) of Saint John N.B., one nephew and three nieces, two great nieces and two great nephews, and four first cousins. She is also survived by her former husband T. Dennis Ryan of Detroit, Mi. Mary’s family would like to thank her doctors, nurses and caregivers for their care and support during her illness. Also they would like to thank her good friends; Don and Ethel Ingram, Wendy Grant, Sue Roma, Joan Cherry, Pat Kiley and Fr. Robie MacPherson for their kind support and encouragement.
Visitation will take place in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax, on Friday, March 17, 2017 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. A Funeral Mass to be held at 10am Saturday March 18, 2017 at St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church, 1725 Oxford St. Halifax, with a reception to follow at the Church Hall. Rev. Fr. Owen Connolly will officiate at the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mary's life. Donations in Mary’s memory may be to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a Charity of your choice.
