Maxine passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 25th at the Hospice of the Comforter in Almonte Springs, Florida with her sisters, Janet and Carole by her side. Maxine was born in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec on May 28, 1942, the eldest daughter of Doris (Torey) and the late Maxwell Young. As a young daughter of a Navy serviceman she moved with her family from Halifax to Victoria to Windsor and back to Halifax where she graduated from Halifax West and then began her long dedicated career in nursing. Following graduation from the VG School of Nursing, Class 64A, she obtained her Diploma in Public Health and her BScN from Mt. Ste. Vincent. After having worked in Montreal as a public health nurse for the VON, she returned to Halifax to teach at the VGH. Upon the closing of the School of Nursing, Maxine became a clinical nurse educator at the Patient and Family Learning Centre at the VG and then at Dalhousie University until her retirement in 2010. Maxine was very involved with the VG School of Nursing Alumni from 1975 – 2011 where she held numerous positions on the Executive and served on many committees including the VG Alumni Newsletter for many years as contributor and then Editor. She was a Charter Member of Calvin Presbyterian Church where she was active in the Ladies Fellowship, the church choir and had served on the Board of Managers for several terms. Maxine was also involved in the Emerald Chapter #58 Order of the Eastern Star and served on the Board of Victoria Hall. Maxine lived her life to the fullest and gave of herself whole-heartedly. She was a regular theatre goer, loved to travel, spend time with her “Red Hatter” friends, and go to the “Waeg” and “Curves”. She will be deeply missed by her many loving friends and co-workers and will be remembered for her loyalty, honesty, generosity, and openness. Many will also remember that she was a great “organizer”. Maxine was pre-deceased by her father, Maxwell. She is survived by her mother, Doris Young, sisters Janet and Carole, brother-in-law Wally Thorne, nephews Andrew and Peter Thorne and nieces, Leslie Thorne and Alison (O’Jay) Robinson. A Memorial Service will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 16, 2011 at Calvin Presbyterian Church, 3311 Ashburn Ave. with Rev. Michael Koslowski officiating. In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Maxine Young may be sent to the Stephen Lewis Foundation, the memorial fund of Calvin Presbyterian Church or a charity of your choice.
