Jollimore, Robert Maxwell - It is with deep sorrow that the family of Robert Maxwell Jollimore, Spryfield, announce his passing on November 21, 2016 in the Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Hospital. He was a beloved husband, wonderful father and grandfather, and was a dedicated servant to his country, his faith and his community.
Bob was born in Halifax. He loved to tell stories of growing up in downtown Halifax and his many adventures with his brother and cousins. He spent a lot of time in Terence Bay as well, and some of his fondest memories are of summers spent at Big Cove Camp as a “cookie.” He joined the Canadian military at the age of 19 and did his basic training at CFB Borden. He took the train from Montreal to Seattle, Washington where he boarded a U.S. troop ship to Korea. After the armistice he served in Montreal with WWI Veterans and was one of the first X-Ray Technicians stationed at CFB Carp, living for a year in the Diefenbunker. Later he was stationed in Germany, where he met the love of his life, Alecta, and they were married for 49 years. Still working in x-ray, he finished his military career as Warrant Officer at CFB Stadacona in 1983, and took a position at the Grace Maternity/I.W.K. Children’s Hospital. He retired permanently in 1998, and his service to his church and community became his new full-time labour of love.
Bob spent much of his life in service to the Masonic brotherhood, beginning as a Mason in Soest, Germany (Beaver Lodge 885) in January 1967. On his return to Canada, he joined the Lodge of St. Mark 38, named Master in 1982 and Grand Chaplain of the Lodge of NS. He was a member of Executive, Freemason’s Hall Ltd.
In 1983 he was inducted into the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, and served as Thrice Puissant Grand Master, 32nd degree. He was very proud to achieve his 33rd Degree as a member of Supreme Council in 2005, and to be part of the Royal Order of Scotland.
He was a member of the Philae Temple of Shriners, Halifax Shrine Club, and part of the Directors Staff. He enjoyed his faith family at Emmanuel Anglican Church in Spryfield, spending many years on Church Council and serving as Warden of the church, sidesperson and on numerous church committees. His love of hymns and carols was evident in his enthusiastic singing from the congregation.
He was an avid bowler for many years in several bowling leagues in Spryfield, and volunteered his time as the Chairman of Group Committee of 1st Spryfield Scout Troop for many years.
Bob’s greatest joy was his family. He enjoyed vacationing across Canada and New England with them every summer, and camping at the Plantation in the Annapolis Valley. Every fall, there would be an apple picking trip, and he always flew the Canadian flag in his yard.
He is survived by his loving wife, Alecta (Smith), son Peter (Shirley), Hatchet Lake, and daughter Leann (Leslie), Stillwater Lake; his brother Gary, Hatchet Lake, and sister Karen (Tom) Welsh, Timberlea, five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Maxwell and Daisy (Slaunwhite), sisters Connie, Judy, Sandra, Gloria, Nina and June (in infancy).
He was a generous and loving grandfather to Allison, Rob, Lauren, Lara, and Kate, and enjoyed nothing more than teaching them the Jollimore Chant (“We are the Jollimores!”), Sweet Molly Malone, and Mares Eat Oats. He got a great kick out of listening to them recite their heritage at every family gathering! He loved family dinners, especially at Swiss Chalet, and his broad, bright smile and laugh will be missed by all who knew him.
Bob loved a good story, and enjoyed his time hunting with his brother and son in South Branch, around Reid Station Road. He enjoyed catching up with the Boutiliers, Conrads and others each November.
Visitation will be held at Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Road, Halifax on Friday, November 25 from 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM. A Masonic Service will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 6:30 PM. The funeral service will be held at Emmanuel Anglican Church, 322 Herring Cove Road at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 26. Reception after the service to be held at the Halifax Shrine Club, 3530 Connolly Street and the interment will follow at 3:00 PM at Oakridge Memorial Gardens, Middle Sackville, In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Emmanuel Anglican Church, the Alzheimers Society of NS, or the Scottish Rite Learning Centre.
Bob, you lived long, and prospered. May the Force be with you!
