FOSTER, Thomas Stephen - Age 71 - It is with great sadness the family of Thomas Foster announces his passing on December 16, 2014, after a brief battle with liver disease. Tom passed away at home with his loving wife, Shirley, at his side. Born in Halifax, NS, in 1943, he was the son of the late Francis and Vera Foster (Swimm).

Tom was a Nova Scotia Land Surveyor. Early in his career he was employed by the Nova Scotia Power Commission. Subsequently he opened and operated his own business, Sackville Surveying Ltd. He then joined the Land Registration and Information Service of the Council of Maritime Premiers, followed by a transfer to the Department of Municipal Affairs of the Province of Nova Scotia from which Tom eventually retired.

Tom was an avid bowler and curler. He was also a handyman and a voracious reader. He enjoyed playing cards and board games. He loved to have fun and was always at the centre of any social function. He especially enjoyed his friends and family. Tom hosted numerous backyard barbeques, annual scavenger hunts, and lobster parties, as well as an annual Christmas open house. He was always there to lend a hand to whoever was in need. He was a kind and generous person. And he was seldom seen without his trademark work boots as part of his ensemble - at any type of function.

Tom is survived by his wife, Shirley Foster (Jefferson); his children, Stephen (Rebekah) Tacoma, Washington; Joan Foster Wentzell (Jason); grandson, Rhys Wentzell, Charlottetown, PEI; brothers Michael (Anne) and Peter (Barb) and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Patricia Charlton, mother of his children. He was predeceased by his son, Richard; and sister, Beverley Dolliver.

A special thank you to all of Tom’s caregivers both at the Halifax Infirmary and at his home.

A celebration of life will be held at the Atlantic Funeral Home on Bayers Road in Halifax, NS on Saturday, December 20. Visitation with the family will be held at 10:00 a.m. with the service scheduled for 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception on site.
