Wayne Dennis Smith "Smitty", 66, passed away in his sleep at home on Sunday, November 27, 2016, Halifax. He was born January 24, 1950 son of Jahalia (Croxen) Smith and the late Gerald Smith.
Wayne is survived by his loving partner Joan Skinner, daughters; Jamie, Mia, Judith & Orian, sons; Wayne Smith, Wade, Jesse, Wayne Skinner, brother Richard (Paula) and extended family Jason and Stacey, 16 grandchildren and 2 great granddaughters. In addition to his father, Wayne was predeceased by his son Aaron and his sister Carmen Husbands.
Wayne was a loving father, grandfather and friend to all and will be remembered by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members. Wayne could accomplish anything he set his mind to and at the young age of 19 he joined the CFL signing with the Ottawa Rough Riders. He had little to no experience at all other than playing for a small local football team "The Buccaneers" in his hometown of Halifax. He was a Canadian Football League Defensive End who played twelve seasons for five different teams. Wayne quickly established himself as an ambitious force within the league eventually becoming a CFL All-Star two times and was on the Grey Cup winning team in 1969 and 1973. Wayne enjoyed sports, especially football, as well as movies, reading and spending time with his family. Visitation will be held Friday, December 2nd from 2-4 and 7-9 pm, in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Road, Halifax. The Funeral service will take place in Atlantic Funeral Home, Saturday, December 3rd, at 1:00 pm, Dr. Rhonda Britton officiating. A repast will follow the service, all at Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd, Halifax. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Big Wayne, may be made to The Canadian Diabetes Association. On-condolences are invited at www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com (Halifax Chapel).
