Shirley L. Lawson (nee Munroe), of Halifax, Nova Scotia
December 2, 1931 – December 30, 2016
Our hearts break to share the news that this active, vibrant, feisty woman passed suddenly on Friday, December 30, 2016, at the QEII in Halifax.
She was 85 years young. She was the daughter of the late Earl and Florence (Cox) Munroe.
Shirley worked for many years at the Moirs Chocolate Factory in Halifax, much to the delight of her children. She also was employed with Sears Halifax, for 15 years as a jewel setter, before her retirement. She was an avid knitter and loved to knit newborn baby outfits, character themed sweaters for her grandchildren, and her comfy knitted slippers were a sought after item by many.
Shirley is survived by her loving and supportive husband, Donald Lawson, Halifax. They have been each other’s rock for 50 years. She is also survived by her daughters Darlene (Larry Murray), Ontario; Faith Roach, Halifax; son Jim (Kim McCorkindale), Ontario. The sun rose and set on Shirley’s grandchildren who adored her and will miss her greatly: Christopher Murray, NY; Hollydawn Murray, UK; Ryan Roach, Halifax; Christian Roach, Halifax; Nicholas Lawson, Ont.; Rachel Lawson, Ont. She also has two great-grandchildren Austin and Paige as well as many nieces and nephews to add to the family tree. Her presence will also be missed by her many friends near and afar.
Shirley was predeceased by her sisters Helen (William Munroe), Rita (Bruce Naugler) and Kathleen (Roland Gravelle). The sisters were close, and full of crazy antics when they were together. She was also predeceased many years ago by her former husband, Jim Lawson.
Heartfelt thanks to the staff at the QEII. A special mention to social worker, Chris Crooks, her ER doctors, ER nurse, Matthew, and 7th floor nurse, Jennifer, who still carried on conversations with her after her passing. Your compassion and care will not be forgotten.
The family wishes to invite you to Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Road, Halifax, on Wednesday, January 4th, from 2-4 pm for a celebration of Shirley’s wonderful life.
