<div itemprop="description">LEYDON, John Joseph “Jack” – 92, Halifax, died November 8, 2016 in the QEII Halifax Infirmary Hospital. Born in Cambridge, Mass., he was the son of the late John Joseph and Charlotte Griffin Leydon. In the 1930’s Jack was an active member of the Halifax Model Airplane Club and could often be found flying his model airplanes at the Halifax Airport, the commons or the Halifax Armoury. In 1938 and 1939 he represented Halifax at the Canadian Nationals in Toronto. Following graduation from Tech he joined Domtar serving as Refinery Manager in Unity, Saskatchewan and Sarnia, Ontario. During his position in Sarnia he served as a Director of St. Joseph’s Hospital, President of the PTA and with Sue as promoters of The Christian Family Movement. Jack joined the Society of St. Vincent de Paul beginning a 50 year commitment to the present day. He started serving as Secretary of the London General Council. He was invited to join the Board of Galveston-Houston Central Council following his move to Houston Texas in the early 60’s. Returning to Halifax in the 70’s he was elected President of the Halifax Particular Council and Vice- President of the newly formed Provincial Council. Active in the formation of the Cursillo Movement in Nova Scotia he was appointed as the first Lay Director and Editor of the Antigonish Diocesan newsletter “Cursillo Capers’. As an original member of the Saturday Morning Group he served as the first President of Hope Farm, a rehabilitation for homeless men near Stewiacke. In parish life he served Sacristan, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and Lector in addition to the Marriage Preparation and RCIA programs. Mr. Leydon was a Professional Engineer in the field of industrial management. His career in mining and chemicals took him to Ontario, Western Canada, Texas and Pennsylvania. In 1962 Mr. Leydon was granted a Patent for work carried out in the field of compaction of inorganic chemicals. In 1968 Jack was chosen by his professional colleagues to Chair the Production Committee of an international trade organization headquartered in Washington, D.C. After an absence of 25 years he returned to Halifax to join the Nova Scotia Department of Environment. In 1988 his work in promoting the protection and preservation of the environment was recognized by The Environmental Control Council. Following his retirement in 1989 he joined Nolan, Davis and Associates as a Senior Associate. In 1993 he was the recipient of the APENS Citizenship Award presented to a Nova Scotia Engineer who has combined a professional career with outstanding service in his community. For three decades Jack authored a number of papers on environmental issues in the United States and Canada. In recent years Jack devoted much time and effort to promoting the Atlantic Marian Movement, but his first love over the years was his family. He loved to spend time with Sue, the children and grandchildren. He made a point of photographing catches so the kids could learn the fisherman’s creed at the same time they learned conversation. Surviving are daughters Pamela ( Mark) Hussey, Boston; Margaret (Scott) Dow, New Hampshire; Catherine Robertson, Halifax; granddaughter Tirzah (Rob) Spang, Chicago; Shallan (Jason) Miller, Somerville, Mass; Kara (Phillip) Russell, New Hampshire; Elizabeth Robertson, Halifax; grandsons Dr. Ken (Patty) Hussey, Augusta, Georgia, Joseph (Sarah) Robertson, Kingston Ont., Peter Robertson, Halifax, Brandon Dow, Dover, New Hampshire, Brendon (Courtney) Robertson, Halifax; brother, Fred (Late Monica) in Ottawa and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by Susan, his wife of 53 years and brothers, Chester (Late Anne) and Paul (Shirley). Ten great-grandchildren carry on the family tradition, Robbie, Grace, Leydon, Lilly, Ronan, Cameron, Dominic, Brady, Griffin, Miriam, and Mckenna Grace expected in March. Visitation is at Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Road, Halifax, Friday from 2-3:30 and 6 to 8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday 10 am at Saint Benedict Roman Catholic Church, with burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Sackville NS. The family would like to express gratitude to Dr. Susan Malloy for her many years of care as well as the medical staff at the QEII.
