Wesley St. Clair "Steve" Stevenson
August 25, 1920 - November 5, 2013
Stevenson, Wesley St Clair (Steve) Head of St Margaret's Bay, finally at peace. We are saddened to announce his death, at home, on November 5, 2013. Steve was born in Halifax on August 25, 1920 to the late Dorcas Tucker and John Stevenson. He was one of the few remaining North Nova Scotia Highlanders. Steve and his regiment landed at Normandy in June 1944. He was wounded, captured and was Prisoner of War. In the meantime his young wife, Berneice (Welton) received notification that he was missing in action and presumed dead. Not so... He escaped, made his way to England where he obtained passage on the Queen Mary. He returned home to Berneice and they enjoyed 58 years of marriage until her death in 1999, which broke his heart but not his spirit. He was a retired DND Firefighter, working at Shearwater and Mill Cove for 30 years. Steve was one of those special individuals who can be described as a real "character". He was a huge presence in a little package. He had an ability to do just about anything that would put many a younger and seemingly fitter man to shame. He was an avid reader, gardener and fisherman. Steve appreciated the need to recycle and compost before it became the thing to do. He could fix anything and was proud of his ability to repair rather than replace. Steve's home was always open to one and all, for a glass of wine, cup of coffee, or just a chat. He loved to be surrounded by family and friends. He enjoyed visits from his sisters Ida Logan, Daisy King and brothers Clarence Munroe, Earl and George (Hazel). He so looked forward to his annual guest, niece Heather Munroe as well as other nieces and nephews. He adored his daughter Trudy, his two grandchildren Myles and Jenna Fawson and was given tremendous joy by his great grandchildren Ayden and Ava Rose. Steve's life was one of challenge, inspiration and joy. Friends and family are invited to join in a celebration of his life on Thursday November 14 at 1 PM at Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Road, Halifax. Reception will follow.
Words cannot express the gratitude the family feels towards his Nurse and Caregiver, Laureen Maw. Stevie called her "Sunshine". She truly enriched his, and all our lives with the exceptional loving care she provided over many years. Special thanks to relatives, friends and neighbours for their daily visits - you certainly brightened his days.
